Paris-Opera and Les Halles

Having worked in the hotel industry and journalism respectively, childhood friends Victor and Enguerrand dreamed of one day running a bar that served up great cocktails in friendly, unpretentious surroundings. And with L’Ours Bar they’re doing just that. This cosy, bear-themed drinking den in the heart of the 10th arrondissement is as popular with down to earth locals as it is with the hipsters who have started flocking to the area. And the owners welcome everyone in the same cheery manner as they serve behind the bar. Classics such as Mojitos, Margaritas and Daiquiris are accounted for, but the pair have also come up with some original house specials. These include the Grand Ourse (Big Bear), which features Chartreuse, rosehip vodka, rosehip syrup and ginger beer, while the Petite Ourse combines honey-flavoured gin (a bear’s favourite tipple, one would imagine) with cranberry juice and Luxardo Maraschino liqueur. Prices are reasonable too – pints are $5 all day and cocktails are $6 during the very generous happy hour, which runs from 6pm to 9pm, rising to $8 after. With good music playing, work by up and coming artists on the walls and tasty bar snacks of cheese and chorizo on the menu, it’s no surprise that this small but perfectly-formed bar fills up quickly with a lively and friendly crowd.
