Alma de Cuba
May 11, 2018
Philly’s hotshot restaurateur Stephen Starr and celebrity chef Douglas Rodriguez are the creative guns behind this cutting edge restaurant-bar that combines a misty-eyed view of pre-Castro Cuba with modern touches of the present-day country: large projected images of Habana Vieja street scenes and people on the walls, Cuban metal-work sculptures by the bar and, naturally, fruity classics like mojitos and daiquiris on offer. The 58-seater first-floor lounge is lush and sensuous with Ottomans and ultra-suede sofas to lounge on, dark-wood cocktail tables covered in red-glass mosaic tiles to rest your drinks on and sultry Latino background music to complete the scene. Makes you want to jump on a plane and head straight to Havana. Poor Americans, if only they could!
