It doesn’t look much from the outside but behind the black exterior lies a beer aficionado’s dream, Monk’s is a celebration of what Belgium does best and features one of the most extensive and delicious collection of beers in the city including a number of enticing rarities and microbrews. The well-informed staff are on hand to guide the novice drinker through the maze of often unfamiliar names and flavours. They have their own Flemish Sour Ale on tap as well as the wonderfully named Delirium Tremens and a tart raspberry beer ß-plus a whole host of others. Should you not want to drink on an empty stomach they also serve an array of cheeses and meaty things (as well as the inevitable moules frites) to compliment the liquid pleasures. It’s a deservedly popular place and it can be difficult to find a spot to sit, or indeed stand, on particularly busy nights.
