A breath of crisp country air in downtown Portland, Red Star Tavern features creatively shaken cocktails and farm fresh food in a casual, stylish, and, ironically, very un-tavern-like setting.

A breath of crisp country air in downtown Portland, Red Star Tavern features creatively shaken cocktails and farm fresh food in a casual, stylish, and, ironically, very un-tavern-like setting. Your immediate quandary upon entering the door at Red Star is trying to figure out whether the focus of their attention is truly on the food or the drinks. You can spend hours drowning in research but you won’t find a winner, and that’s what makes this place special. The bar at Red Star prides itself on implementing tried and true classic techniques using fresh squeezed juices and house-made ingredients like their signature Serrano pepper and honey syrup. The focus is on balance and freshness, and don’t be at all surprised to see the bartenders going back-and-forth to the kitchen to grab fruits and herbs to mix into their cocktails to get the taste just right. A couple of the creative and fun examples in their cocktail repertoire are the Saged and Confused; made with ultra premium vodka, local riesling wine, lemon, sage, and sweet agave, and the Masala Sour; a frothy and exotic mix of vokda, chai-infused red vermouth, lemon, and egg white. Not to mention the entire page of the cocktail menu dedicated to manhattans and martinis. The tavern beer selection is a craft tour of the region and pours plentiful during the daily happy hour (yes, even on the weekends). When hunger strikes, the food menu steps up to the creative plate with a Tavern Burger full of smokey tomato compote and green chili aioli along with an Apple Cider Brined Pork Chop that pairs with Red Star’s cocktails perfectly.
