The drinking scene in Queenstown throws up some hidden gems and the self-proclaimed ’boutique nightlife bar’ Bar up is just such a secret. A hard-to-find lounge upstairs in The Mall, you half-think you’re entering a winter cabin in the woods when you arrive. A fireplace rages on one side, hipsters huddle on comfy red leather couches and low-hung ceilings add extra intimacy, with red lampshades casting a warm glow over the place (there’s a lot of red in the place the retro stylish printed wallpaper also favours that shade but somehow it manages to be cosy rather than overpowering). In summer of course the place has a different feel: French doors open up on the spacious balcony and a breeze comes in off the lake. They stock fine wines and whiskeys and staff have an extensive cocktail repertoire, too. Our tip: ask for a Gin Gimlet in summer, a Brandy Alexander in winter, though the best known drink is the Money Shot, which is a constant on the menu all year round. Your bar tender will be only too happy to oblige they know what they are doing here and are always willing to offer advice (they’re currently revamping the cocktail menu, so worth asking what they have on offer, there might be some nice surprises!). The venue holds regular events and parties, such as 80s theme nights, which are popular with a fun loving, unpretentious crowd who are just here to party until the early hours. Why not pop along and join them they’re sure to welcome you.
