Surreal is a downtown restaurant and dance lounge that the Australian and New Zealand style press have been raving about and, we have to admit, with good reason. Opened in 1997 by Melissa Stadler and going strong ever since, it remains one the area’s top night spots. You can see why from the food alone: fresh, organic local produce spiced up with delectable Asian touches which has won the place a slew of awards. Try their New Zealand lamb in a kiwi fruit and tamarind sauce on for size, best accompanied with a classy glass of red. They also do a decent lunch menu (try the late riser breakfast yum!) and a tasty selection of tapas, which offers more choice for the vegetarians than the meaty main menu. But dining here is only half the draw. After 10pm the chairs, tables and couches are moved away, the cocktails start flowing and DJs step up to the mic. We thought Queenstown was a town of adventure sports junkies but check out the packed floor on the dub, drum ‘n’ bass, reggae or hip hop nights and it’s clear there are just as many dance junkies in town. There’s a regular calendar of live gigs covering everything from house to rock and roll, and creative types will be keen to know they have ‘artists get free drinks’ promotions on certain nights. The outdoor deck is perfect for warmer days the views are gorgeous so if the weather is up to it bag yourself a table outside and enjoy great food and quality drinks in a beautiful setting.
