The Hassler is one of Rome’s most elegant hotels. It’s a vastly glamorous space, with its sweeping, curving staircases, velvet couches and curtains, and luxurious public areas. The dinky but iconic Hassler bar is one of the top cocktail spots in the city, where Rome’s high flyers like to meet for a drink. Annexed to the hotel’s equally swish Salone Eva, it’s a tranquil, hidden venue, tailor-made for an aperitif, all dark wood and deep red leather, curving banquettes and gilded mirrors on the walls. It’s something of a time-capsule, and a drink here is like stepping back to the glamorous 1940s and 50s when Hollywood types would come for the cocktails. The signature drink is the Veruschka, a divine mix of pomegranate juice and sparkling Italian wine, but they also do an impeccable negroni. Romantic, classic, timeless, a drink here will cost you but it’s an experience worth paying for, a slice of liquid history. Be sure to check out the neighbouring champagne bar too.
