You might struggle to locate this gem in the Gaslamp district – they don’t put a sign up on the door and there’s a certain ‘only-those-in-the-know’ cool cachet to the place. Onyx is the swanky 1920s-style basement lounge exuding prohibition-era class, best manifested in their Classic Jack and Coke served in a coffee mug. They have live jazz on Tuesdays and DJs spin house and other club tunes Thursday to Saturday. You might also want to sample their world famous Red Apple Martinis, which make a change from the more popular lime green apple concoctions you usually get these days. Thin is the more recent more clubby addition to the space on the street level, the hottest new hangout for San Diego hipsters. Join them – if you can find them.
