University Heights social dive bar with clever, high-quality cocktails, specialized bar food, shuffleboard and cornhole.

Don’t be fooled by the self-proclaimed classification of this University Heights Dive Bar. This casual, sometimes raucous spot churns out well-balanced, clever cocktails. Part of the next wave of revitalized bar spaces (this one was Bourbon Street) combining laid-back charm with high-quality bartending and old-timey decor. You walk in and there’s a shuffleboard spot right there (you’ll also find ping pong and bean toss/cornhole elsewhere in the multi-room space). The crowd is young and diverse, though trends fratty on weekends and you’ll find live music some nights with group-friendly seating. Bar food includes vegan options (because: San Diego), “mystery tots” and killer burgers from Royale With Cheese. Moderately priced signature drinks trend sweet with a strong liqueurs and cordials game being played.

Martini: know your Dry from your Dirty The Martini is to drinking what the two-step is to dance: great its own but also a solid base with which to experiment. Any discerning drinker worth their salt (or olive brine) should have at least a passing acquaintance with it. The bartender’s lips may say she’s not judging you for not knowing your dry from your dirty, but her eyes tell a different story.
