It’s the space that really sings at The Cavalier, a swish new operation located alongside the Zetta Hotel. Located on a prime spot Downtown, this British-inspired bar and restaurant is the work of the team behind top-rated restaurants Park Tavern and Marlowe. The bar area has been designed to look a bit like a country estate, complete with plaid wallpaper, big game taxidermy and framed drawings of dapper chaps in top hats. It’s an attractive room, all muted blues and greys with huge arched windows to let in the light, deep red leather banquettes and charcoal-black ceilings. A bar stretches down one side of the narrow room and service is efficient and on the ball. The drinks list is limited to classic cocktails like the Bramble. We’re drawn to The Victorian, a blend of rye, madeira, earl grey tea and sweet vermouth. These guys aren’t innovating but they’re serving up well made drinks in a classy and handsome space, and sometimes that’s all you need of a night. The food in the restaurant proper is worth checking out too, boatloads of fresh seafood and oysters, steak pie and a ‘Sunday roast’ of chicken, mash and gravy (no Yorkshires though, pity). The house burger comes with English cheddar and triple cooked chips and there’s steamed pudding and lemon posset for dessert.
