Few things compare to the taste of a really good cigar. At San Francisco’s aptly named Cigar Bar, this is practically their mantra. Located in historic Jackson Square, this is one of the few places in the city where smoking is legal and they boast a superbly stocked humidor. In addition to quality cigars, they serve decent cocktails and plenty of tempting bar snacks. While the skilled bar tenders make the classics well, you could try ordering something a little more unusual: signature drinks include Smoke and Mirrors, a decadent mix of black bottle scotch, mixed with vermouth, orange juice and spiced blood orange, the splendidly named Tears and Tequila, which adds cucumber and lime to the mix, or, since you’re in the area, try the Jackson Square, which includes hazelnut syrup. Or why not try their sangria, a speciality of the house? There’s a decent selection of wines and beers, too, and a very tempting happy hour if you’re boozing on a budget. Food is served evenings only and is rustic in nature, including a range of generous sharing platters and traditional bar food such as beef sliders, chicken wings and fish and chips. If you’re there for a cigar, the range is excellent and the staff are knowledgeable, and happy to assist a novice in choosing from the extensive array, though guests are always welcome to bring their own cigars should they wish. There’s an attractive patio area complete with tinkling fountains, perfect for sharing a bottle of wine and enjoying the evening air, and they often play host to live Latin music. A lively vibe prevails you could almost claim the joint was smokin’.
