San Francisco-Financial District

Hakkasan is stylish modern Cantonese restaurant and lounge bar, part of a small global chain, which sells itself on sleek, low-lit décor and its excellent food (the London original regular features on lists of the world’s best restaurants). Its latest branch is in San Francisco and it’s found quite a following amongst the city’s corporate and fashionable types, those with the necessary cash to splash on a meal here. The venue is reached via an elevator from street level. On entering you’ll find yourself in the lounge area, facing a dramatic oval-shaped blue bar surrounded by slender black bar stools; the dining area is separated from this space by a series of ornate oriental wooden screens. The décor is all black and blue and moody, with music gently pumping in the background, giving the venue a real buzz. The cocktails are served with a dash of theatre, presented in towering glasses – which we guess goes some way to justify their price. The drinks are very good though and the cocktail list features all the Hakkasan signatures as well as some drinks created especially for this branch. The Hakka dim sum platters are not to be missed, particularly their scallop shu mai, and if you really want to go to town, you should try the stir-fry lobster in XO sauce.
