San Francisco-Mission District
May 11, 2018
Located right in the middle of the Mission District, this trendy cocktail spot is the baby of hotshot bartending trio of Ryan Fitzgerald, Erik Reichborn-Kjennerud, and Todd Smith. Fitzgerald served time at Beretta and Reichborn-Kjennerud owns Dalva while Smith is a Bourbon & Branch alum. So it’s no surprise that their 16-drink menu is a thing of creativity, the list organized by spirit and many of the recipes drawn from other top San Francisco bartenders or with some other San Fran connection. There’s lots to like here but the Lefty’s Fizz stands out, a smoky concoction of mezcal, lime, grapefruit shrub, dry curacao, and egg white, while the Whiskey in Church is a rich complex drink, blending Scotch with oloroso sherry, maple, and smoked pear bitters. There are also three beers on tap, cult crafts brews from the likes of Moonlight, as well as three draft wines – very on trend again – from the hip Matthiasson winery. The room is spacious and handsome with a bold black-and-white mural on one of the walls, age-burnished mirrors, and long communal tables at which to perch with your drink. The similarly thoughtful small plate menu is also worthy of your attention.
What their peers say
“I love ABV. Its a great mix of atmosphere, interesting and delicious cocktails, delicious food (the burger is killer), and friendly bartenders. Part of me wishes it was my neighborhood bar since I always end up running into someone I know there, but another part of me knows I’d only end up spending too much time there if it was nearby.” WBB Writer Lou Bustamante
