After closing for renovations, the Financial District’s German beer hall Schroeder’s has reopened with a new look and new owners. The space has now been divided in two, with a front room – home to the original rosewood bar – where the beer lives, and a large back dining room which serves a menu of tasty German-influenced dishes. There are still vintage murals on the walls but also a more contemporary, rough-edged vibe to the place. The bar stocks 21 draft brews, from Germany’s Schlenkerla rauchbier and Schonramer pilsner to local beers like Magnolia kolsch and Trumer Pils. But now there are also cocktails too, care of Claire Jane Hunter, and many of these, keeping to the theme, use German ingredients like kirschwasser and killepitsch. Try the One Eyed Dog, a refreshing mix of gin, Weinstephaner, lemon, almond milk, and mint, washed with absinthe. A lively after-work crowd come here to enjoy the steins of beer and the communal tables, but also the hearty food which includes Potato Pancakes served with tangy tomato relish, basil, as well as pretzels, pork loin with sauerkraut, various wursts and other meaty treats.
