Expect apothecary-themed cocktails and herbal tonics at this cool new North Beach hang out. The Devil’s Acre is a chic space, its warm woodwork contrasting appealingly with the bright, light aqua paintwork. Behind the bar they’ve got a full chemist’s kit, everything from eye droppers to vintage pharmacist canisters. The cocktail programme is seriously inventive, full of historically accurate drinks like the St. Croix Fix and Devil’s Manhattan as well as original creations to which you can add one of eight “remedies”. These remedies, which have been developed by a herbalist, are named things like “immunity tonic” (one of them is designed to cure hangovers, for which we’re thankful) and include various medicinal herbs and plants. They even have a vintage cocktail spinner from the nineteenth century, which is a joy to watch in action, and if that wasn’t enough there’s even a hidden basement bar down an unmarked staircase in the back, where the real cocktail fun begins. It’s cave-like and atmospheric and a great place to hunker down and sample their unique herbal tipples. Bear in mind that both spaces are reservations only so do book ahead.
