There's so much to love about SoMa's Alchemist. For one thing, it's one heck of an attractive space.

There’s so much to love about SoMa’s Alchemist. For one thing, it’s one heck of an attractive space. The cocktails here lean classic with its chocolate brown leather Chesterfields, bare brickwork, red damask wallpaper and wooden beams. The place is stuffed with pretty trinkets: old gramophones, chandeliers and writing desks. Silent movies are projected on the walls and the bar is supremely well stocked with all manner of popular and less well known spirits. The list of ten cocktails run from classics given a modern twist to cool original concoctions, like the Smoking with the Devil, a potent blend of mezcal, port, lime, and egg white, lightly sweetened with agave and charged with Hellfire Bitters, which more than lives up to its name. The Stop Fenneling Me (boom, boom) a complex mix of gin, manzanilla, falernum, and fennel bitters, is also a winner, albeit something of an acquired taste, while the tart but fruity Shrub Down blends rum, strawberry & rhubarb shrub, creme de banana, and lemon. There’s a rotating list of craft beer, bar snacks care of Root – and they have Shuffleboard (of course they do)
