Situated in an area already replete with decent dining and drinking options, the Presidio Social Club is an instant classic. An exclusive, clubby atmosphere without actually being all that exclusive (despite the name this is not a members’ club – it’s open to all). Inside the bar and restaurant (in a building which was built in the early 1900s as military barracks) there’s a distinctly 1940s feel with old pharmacy cabinets and antique fixtures dotted around the room. The menu focuses on California food, with an emphasis on seasonal and locally sourced produce, and boasts classic American grub such as fried oysters, steak, burgers and macaroni and cheese, with a daily changing specials menu. Desserts are particularly tempting (the banana cream pie is a favourite) and they do a tasty brunch menu too. Bar snacks are also available if you just want a light nibble to go with your beverage. Drinks are equally decent, and the cocktail list boasts both classic and contemporary concoctions we’d go for the Badminton Cup (Burnett’s gin, cucumber, lime and mint very refreshing!) or the ‘packs a punch’ Gunpowder, where the gin is spiced up with a pinch of cayenne pepper. There’s a selection of barrel aged spirits on offer, and a decent selection of wines and beers. Seafood lovers might be tempted by the Bubbles and Bivalves offer 3 oysters and a flight of bubbles for 20 bucks. Deservedly popular, the place gets pretty packed on the weekends, but it’s a good place to hit any night of the week.
