San Francisco-South Market

This airy, light Napa bar and restaurant from chef Sean O’Toole is popular with the locals for all manner of reasons, not least it’s recently introduced cocktail list. When Torc initially opened, there was only wine and beer to be had, but now thanks to new bar manager Corey Harrison – formerly of the Rich Table in San Francisco – it has a new menu of playful and creative drinks. The Bitter Rival, a blend of tequila blanco, lime, strawberry, and Aperol is tart but also pleasingly fruity, a layered thing. It makes a great aperitif before settling in for dinner. The Savoir Faire on the other hand is sweet but not excessively so, a blend of Torc amaretto, lemon, orgeat, and vanilla. The space is lovely and sunny and open and the dining area high-ceilinged and barn-like. From the awesome food menu, you should try the epic porchetta, a large slab of spit-roasted pork, the Hudson Valley foie gras, or the tempura soft shell crab. Bar snacks include devilled eggs and butternut squash pakoras. Their daily happy hour is one of the best around with $6 drinks and $5 bites.
