Arguably Tacoma’s only true cocktail bar, 1022 South has quickly established itself as a purveyor of distinctive libations, original drinks with a contemporary twist. It’s a really tiny space, seating only 20 at a squeeze, but it’s not short of ambition or creativity. The bar abounds with jars, beakers, and bottles containing a variety of exotic spirits, infusions and tinctures. All the mixers are made in-house and there are some intriguing flavour combinations to be tried. The spring menu displays literary leanings, with drinks like the Under the Volcano a mix of cinnamon infused tequila and hellfire tincture and the Garden of Forking Paths, an aromatic concoction laced with cilantro and Serrano pepper. The Gone-Away World teams gin with Pimm’s No 1, apple cider, ginger beer and cucumber, making it pretty much the quintessential spring tipple. The Apothecary section of the menu contains their more experimental drinks, like the Thank God for the Worker Bees, which blends honey, mezcal, and spicy Sriracha sauce. And if you want to put your fate in the bartenders’ hands, you should definitely try the Apothecary Cup and get yourself a custom-made drink. These guys are pretty much guaranteed to steer you safe. They also serve a good range of classic drinks if you’re feeling a little less adventurous and want to stick to the tried and tested. Their 4-8 p.m. happy hour is a good deal, allowing you plenty of time to do the list justice.
