Spread over two levels, the spacious Capitol Cider is housed in what was the Fetherston Gallery. The bar features a 30-tap selection of ciders, both local and national, alongside another 100 bottled ciders and a small range of beers. It’s a relatively traditional space, the walls adorned with original oil paintings created by local art school students from Capitol Hill’s Gage Academy of Art. Dark wood is a dominant theme; there are dark wood booths, dark wood panelling and dark wood tables. In the downstairs Games Room you’ll find two 18-foot shuffleboard tables, various board games and a stage with a 107-year-old piano. There’s a fireplace on one wall and a huge communal table around which you and your friends can sip your cider. The food menu offers standard pub food with a twist, as all the dishes are gluten free. There’s a real emphasis on making things in-house here, everything from the hand-cut fries to the batter on the fish & chips. The bar also promises a craft cocktail programme which again will feature fresh-squeezed juices and house-made ingredients. They stock a wide array of liquors, including a huge selection of apple brandy and Calvados, one of the largest in the state apparently. cider aficionados definitely need to acquaint themselves with this place.
