E. Smith Mercantile

Cocktails and shopping combine to winning effect in E. Smith Mercantile, a family-run boutique twinned with a cool bar. It’s a pairing that will doubtless appeal to many. The Pioneer Square spot is the creation of Kate Poole and daughters Jesse and Sara (the venue takes its name from Kate’s grandfather). E. Smith is split into two distinct sections: you first enter a handsome shop selling clothing, pottery and cosmetics alongside a range of artisan and mostly local groceries. Nice as all that is, we’re altogether more interested in the liquid side of the operation. The bar is an attractive mix of bare brickwork, granite and pressed tin, with chandeliers dangling from above, and the cocktail menu the work of daughter Jesse – changes seasonally and includes a selection of creative drinks such as the Miner’s Campfire, a smoky salt-rimmed mix of Scotch, tequila, grapefruit, honey and house-made smoked bitters. Local spirits feature prominently. The bar’s snack menu is also well worth exploring and includes a range of bar bites as well as a few larger plates. The house-made ricotta with local honey is, by all accounts, pretty special.
