Le Caviste Wine Bar

Le Caviste Wine Bar is an urbane spot with a French twist. Owned by David Butler, the former sommelier of Le Gourmand it’s perhaps not surprising that French wines feature prominently. Chalk boards line the wall listing whites, reds and sparkling wines, as well as suggesting various cheese, meats, and seasonal plates to pair with your wine. Pretty much all wines are offered by the glass as well as by the bottle and all the wines are well-priced considering the quality involved. Butler is a good teacher too and more than willing to talk you through the choices in an informative and unpretentious manner. Wine buffs will be in their element here, but those who don’t know their Vouvray from their Voigner will also be well-served. The venue itself is relaxed and simply decorated, with green walls, a scattering of tables plus bar-top seating and modern, exposed bulbs lighting the room. By the door there’s a selection of wines to buy should you want to take a bottle or two home with you. Bar snacks include Lucques olives, tasty French and local cheeses and some more substantial dishes: trout cooked in parchment and a glorious mushroom and egg dish that’s crying out to be mopped up with a piece of good crusty bread.
