Ballard’s Ocho is well known for its superior tapas, but it also does a short list of mainly quality cocktails with which to wash them down. Monday nights are tiki nights and Ddinks are served in festive, tiki appropriate vessels, complete with fruit and paper umbrellas (who can resist a paper umbrella). The Tradewinds is a potent thing which combined both Jamaican and Puerto Rican rum with brandy, coconut and lemon, while The Fogcutter is a kicky thing made from aquavit. Cocktails are available all the week through too and the Sagrada Familia, made with pear brandy and cava is a perfect aperitif. The venue itself is warm and vibrant with that day’s dishes written up on the chalkboard, except Spanish staples and more adventurous dishes like gratinated squash with almond cream and merguez sausage with chickpeas and saffron aioli. Their cider-glazed chorizo really hits the spot, especially when paired with a suitably fruity cocktail or some of their crisp, refreshing Sangria Blanca.
