Late Night Drinking

Von’s, with its brightly coloured wheel of boozy fortune and its pocket friendly prices, was a Seattle favourite. Though the original premises lost their lease and had to close, the name is being revived by Merrisa Firnstahl-Claridge, the daughter of the owner, in a new location on the Harbor Steps. This isn’t just a copycat of the old place; the new bar has been given a makeover for the 21st century which includes one of the city’s largest collections of premium spirits. Many of the ingredients are now made in-house, including a range of infusions and barrel aged tequila. Their house-made’ Sanctified’ vodka is the basis for the Skinny Bitch, their take on a Cosmo. Their French Open is a mix of Lillet, champagne and raspberry coulis decorated with sugar spun table-side and their version of the classic Martinez (one of our favourite drinks) is garnished with house made brandied cherries. The new venue is much sleeker with an open kitchen and a gleaming wall of bottles, the ceiling covered in a collage of flags of every county represented on the shelves. The food menu has been reinvigorated and their fresh baked bread is made from the family’s 50-year old sourdough starter. Those famous $5 ‘Scratch’ Martinis are still on the drinks list and the new incarnation boasts its own version of the drinks wheel. Some things never change, and of that we are glad.
