Cider lovers need to get themselves down to Fremont. This place may not be all that fancy, but it’s a winner on the drinks front. The bar – which incidentally is owned by the descendants of the man behind the Schilling Spice Company – is pretty simply decked out, with wooden communal tables and a number of metal stools on which to perch, but it’s the contents of your glass that really gets the juices flowing. Schilling Cider House serves a range of their own ciders – including an oak-aged number and one laced with ginger – alongside those from other top-end, craft producers; there 32 available on tap, rotating from month to month, and including at least one nitro cider. They also – as so many places do these days – offer cider tasting flights. This is a great way to explore all they have to offer without going overboard and sample a large variety of the ciders available, while comparing different styles. They also offer growlers which can be filled up and taken home, so you can partake of their lovely wares in the comfort of your own living room. While the bar doesn’t have a kitchen, they are more than happy to let you order in from some of the local restaurants and have the food delivered to your table.
