One of latest entries to Seoul’s scintillating speakeasy scene, 12 Stairs exquisitely mixes vintage style with modern mixology to create a shiny – albeit slightly hidden – gem. Fittingly, you must traverse an alleyway and descend a flight of steps as part of your arrival at 12 Stairs, and once inside, you will find an ambiance straight from the hidden bars so prevalent during Prohibition alive and well. A gilded chandelier, shiny bottle display cabinet, and marble bar invite you to sit, relax, and peruse the one-page drink menu. This fact should not overlooked, as while many bars enter into a game of one-upmanship to see how many cocktails they can place on their multi-page menus, 12 Stairs keeps things simple, and it more than pays off when you taste your cocktail. The menu at 12 stairs is full of vintage classics like the Sidecar, Sazerac, Old Fashioned, and Manhattan, but they also do excellent versions of new classics like the Mexican Paloma – tequila and grapefruit – and the sultry South American Caiprinha – a mix of lime, sugar and cachaça. All are crafted with skill and precision that results in hands-down some of the best cocktails in Seoul. A myriad of premium whiskies are on offer as well, and 12 Stairs stays open well into the wee hours in order for you to enjoy it all.
