Mr. Saimon Bar
May 11, 2018
Bartending veteran Sungjin Ahn opened this little place way back in the drinks dark ages of 2001 and it became an instant mecca for Seoul’s serious whisky hounds. Mr. Saimon Bar was probably the first bar in town to pioneer events from whisky tastings and Cognac tastings to bartending classes for the humble amateur, and an entire generation of Seoulites discovered whisky here. Obviously, even the best bars need a refresh after that long on the scene, and this was duly delivered in 2014 when Ahn and his world-class selection of fine whiskies upped sticks for this Sinsa-dong space. It’s hard to miss the theme of this bar: there’s fine whiskies illuminated on all but one wall (that’s the one with the map of Scotland’s distilleries) and even decorating the ceiling. Service is classically perfect, and if you want to learn more about whisky, whether from the excellent bar staff or your fellow drinkers, this is probably the single best spot in Seoul. Not one to rest on his laurels, however, Mr Ahn also offers a selection of pleasingly classical cocktails, based both on whisky and on super-premium versions of the national spirit, soju. A Seoul classic, and a must-visit for any serious boozehound looking to explore the city’s finest bars, this is a place where you’ll be happy solo, or in a small group: we recommend visiting midweek, settling in early, and trusting the bar staff to deliver pure liquid pleasure.
