It was only a matter of time before Shanghai got its own speakeasy. Owned by American couple Mike and Daisy Chiang (the team behind Citizen), the bar manages to avoid most of the clichés of the modern speakeasy. It’s a handsome space with wine-red curtains and dark wood, attractive table lamps and a pressed tin ceiling all the way from Texas. It conveys the essence of the American 1920s without feeling like a theme park. The drinks menu is excellent, including a vast range of brown spirits – including a huge selection of bourbons and ryes – and some great cocktails based on those spirits. Cocktails include the refreshingly herbal basil gimlet, a potent Vieux Carre, and a smooth Sazerac. Complemantary tapas are served alongside the drinks and the service is accommodating.
