Tailor Bar is the work of Eddy Yang, one of China’s top barmen – he honed his craft working in venues like Covent Garden’s subterranean Detroit, when it was on top form, and now he’s brought these skills back to Shanghai. Located four floors above street level, Tailor is slightly unassuming to look at, but there’s some real craftsmanship at work here. If you want to look at something pretty you can revel in the views of the nearby Jingan Temple. Tailor, as its name might suggest, offers bespoke drinks made to suit the customers’ specifications; you can pick a drink type and a base spirit and let them do their thing. Yang has charm to spare as a host and he really knows his stuff. The bar boasts a good range of spirits and the Apple Pie, a mix of chocolate bitters, egg white, caramelized icing sugar, and apple pie moonshine is an absolutely first class drink. You’ll also want to try The Firs Glaze, a blend balsamic vinaigrette glaze, ginger syrup, apple juice and sea salt, typically based on Chivas 18.
