One of Sheffield’s newest and most self-consciously glamorous bars, SOYO opened in March 2009 after various hold-ups and delays. Does it live up to expectations? Well, this Devonshire Quarter bar is certainly an exciting and stylish space with lots of gleaming wood funky graphics and rich, earthy colours; one can see where the money’s been spent. This is very much a place where people come to be looked at and the way people dress reflects that: so expect lots of labels and surface gloss plus a tough door policy (best leave those battered but much-loved jeans in the wardrobe). The room is dramatic and the drinks list extensive fortunately they have decent after work offers during the week so the dent in your wallet needn’t be too deep. The music is mainly crowd-pleasing, mainstream stuff, but it does the job and gets people dancing.
