The Auld Alliance
May 11, 2018
There’s a library-like vibe to this handsome bottle-lined bar. The place is a whisky-lover’s delight: bottles, bottles, everywhere and so many drops to drink.
The Auld Alliance, which is now in new premises, stocks a dizzying 1,350 different varieties, its selection including labels from all over the world: Scotland, Ireland, America.
They’re particularly strong on Japanese whisky and have one of the biggest selections anywhere outside of Japan.
The menu is a 70-page volume which may well be daunting to those who are new to whisky drinking but the informed, helpful, friendly staff are on hand to help you negotiate your way through it, whatever your budget or tastes (they won’t try to aggressively up-sell you which is always something we appreciate).
The room is incredibly handsome too, with its gently backlit shelves and its brown leather Chesterfield couches giving it a masculine, clubby atmosphere which falls just the right side of stuffy.
There are tasting flights available which make a good starting point, grouped by flavour profile and distillery. If you know your stuff and have deep pockets there are some real rarities available too.
