Brklyn, a new late night Manly drinking den with a blokey atmosphere, is hidden in the back of the beachfront bar Sugar Lounge. It’s a sort of speakeasy-style space, designed, we gather, to be a ‘bar for bartenders.’ It’s the fifth spot to be opened by Manly’s Adam Clarke and Kieran Bailey, who also own Miss Marley’s, Cantinero, and Harlem on Central as well as the Lounge. They stock a good range of small-batch spirits and serve US-style dude food, pizza by the slice and hot dogs too. American beer is a big deal here and they serve giant cans of PBR along with plenty of bottles of ice cold Bud. There’s a cool jukebox in one corner, with all the record labels missing to keep you on your toes, and the space is kitted out with dark leather booths and a vaguely industrial, down-at-heel aesthetic. It’s a very dark masculine space overall, though we’re not sure how keen we are on the fact that all the bar tenders are female it’s fine, of course, more than fine, if that’s just the way of things, less cool though if it’s a conscious effort to give the guys something to gawp at. The place is open until 3am and there’s a pool table (no surprises there) and an old Street Fighter arcade machine to keep you entertained between rounds of beer.
