Hidden behind an unmarked wooden sliding door at the lower end of Foveaux Street in Surry Hills, you’ll find Button, from the people behind Stitch and Pocket. Inside, there’s a vaguely ship-like thing going on, with a pair of crossed muskets hanging behind the bar. The atmospheric dark, wood-panelled room is candlelit and inviting: the walls are lined with leather booths and there’s a large communal table in the middle of the room. Hanging wooden baskets filled with fruit dangle above the bar. They stock a large array of spirits including an abundance of scotch, bourbon and rye as well as home spiced rum and sherry. Cocktails include the Box of Rain, a blend of white rum and coconut water, and the Beetlejuice, an (almost) virtuous mix of beetroot and ginger juice with gin, Punt e Mes and sweet vermouth and a dash of ginger beer. The whisky-based Smoking Gun is all smoke and sweet while the Pleasure Vessel blends rum with Grand Marnier, orange blossom water, and marmalade, a splash of grapefruit juice introducing a note of tartness into the mix. They also stock a range of local craft beer and service is friendly and good-humoured, ship-shape if you will.
