We like a pun, we do. And we like Cliff Dive, a dive bar by way of the Pacific. The team behind Tio’s have converted an old nightclub on Oxford Street into a temple of hand-picked Pacific kitsch, complete with sunken dance floor and reams of seagrass, an abundance of shells and wooden statues dotted round the grotto-like walls. Like its sister bar, Cliff Dive does cocktails for $10, tropical concoctions such as the Pandang a blend of rum, apple juice and pandan syrup, and the Spicy Bastard, a kicky mix of rum, ginger and tamarind. If you’re with a group of friends the monkey skull sharing cocktail is a fun way to go. Beer comes in cans and includes Devils Canyon Sunshine Rye IPA and there are a tasty array of bar snacks, seafood dumplings, barbeque pork buns, if you’re after a bite to eat. The under-the-sea-themed dance floor, with its floating paper fish lights, fills up as the evening progresses and the atmosphere becomes steadily more club-like. Arrive early to snag one of the booths or get a prime spot at one its two bars. Come on a weekend for a proper party atmosphere: Friday evenings are rock’n’roll, while on Saturdays things turn hip-hop.
