- Night Out

The Darlo Bar at the Royal Sovereign Hotel has a pleasantly retro vibe. Think off-white leather chairs, bright pink and green 70s-style sofas, 1960s trinkets and a scattering of garden gnomes, giving it a pleasingly kitsch air, sort of Life on Mars meets Mad Men. It’s a friendly, colourful space (if a little self-consciously quirky) made all the more agreeable by the recently opened patio terrace upstairs, featuring green tiled walls and plenty of white iron garden chairs and tables, making it the perfect place to chill on a warm evening. Popular with the Darlinghurst locals, it’s the ideal venue to quaff one of their fine mojitos while soaking up the sun, though its popularity means it inevitably gets a little busy at peak times, but that just adds to the atmosphere. The relaxed, informal ambience makes it a suitable venue for a friends’ night out or an informal date, and it’s a well-known joint in the neighbourhood, so go a few times and you’re likely to start recognising familiar faces. Food is ordered in via a menu that sources from local eateries so there should be something whatever your taste. There are offers run all week, and the competitive among you can take part in the Tuesday night pool competition, or Thursday night trivia quiz (for their less financially endowed patrons, they also run a ‘tight ass’ Tuesday, with selected drinks $5 all night). DJs spin tunes on the weekend and the bar also boasts a well-stocked bottle shop – plus, if you overindulge there’s accommodation available, with 8 well-appointed-hotel rooms only a short stagger away.
