About Mr Moustache
Mezcal, that smoky sibling of tequila, is growing in popularity the world over. The agave-based spirit now has its own shrine in Sydney ub Mr Moustache, a mirror-walled bar with an elegant, almost art deco look in terms of design, and Mexican blood in its veins. Behind the marble-topped bar, there's a gleaming selection of mezcal, over 50 varieties in total, making it the biggest selection in Australia. Owners Regina Buenos Ros and Bildo Saravia know their stuff, which they import through their own company, Casa Mezcal, Cocktails include El Original del Diablo cocktail made with mezcal, agave, lime, house-made ginger beer and Amaro Montenegro, and the Bittersweet Margay, a smoky twist on the Negroni. They stock and serve some excellent artisanal mezcal if you want to widen your palate and there is a range of Mexican beers on offer if you want something less potent. Grub-wise, we're talking Mexican street food classics like the seriously (and we mean seriously) fiery tortita ahogadas served with protective gloves (!) or earthy tostaditas huitlacoches. Try their guava crßme brulee for dessert. It's a mid-sized bar, seating 50, but it's already proving popular so book ahead to secure a table.
