The Sokyo Lounge is a seriously fun bar in an unexpected location. This new spot at The Star, a vast entertainment complex in the heart of the casino district, with its suited clientele and general air of swank, is full of surprises. With a bold comic-book vibe and striking wall art, it’s far more relaxed and playful than you might at first expect. Award-winning head bartender Michael Chiem’s menu is also super exciting, full of inventive twists on classic drinks. Check out the Shiso-jito, a creative blend of Havana Club Blanco and lime, soda served with kalamansi lime and shiso leaf sorbet, or the Nashi Sling, a familiar drink given new life with homemade nashi puree and pineapple. Beer is also a big deal here and they also stock a wide range of US and Australian bottled beers along with more unusual Japanese varieties. There’s even Sapporo and Fat Yak on tap. There’s a small menu of snacks on offer the tempura snapper and cuttlefish pairs brilliantly with beer but if you’re feeling flush you can also order from the full menu at the adjacent uber-swish Japanese restaurant of the same name before hitting the blackjack tables. The whole place has a welcome irreverent energy, which belies its glamorous surroundings and there’s a sense it doesn’t take itself too seriously, which appeals to us.
