In an area bereft of decent drinking spots, Stitch shines. Run by the chaps behind Pocket and new bar Button, Stitch glitters. This Wynard basement spaceis compact but handsome; the low-lit room has s a string of plush booths on one side and some much coveted seats by the bar. Just one look at the cocktail list is enough to make you smile. The classics are all present and correct they do an on the nose Old Fashioned and a well-made Manhattan but it’s the house drinks that really excite. There’s a real willingness to experiment in evidence. The gin-based Beetlejuice is made with beetroot and ginger juice while the Shine on You contains Stitch’s own house-infused bourbon among its ingredients. The Elegantly Wasted blends tequila with blackcurrant and home-made kaffir lime leaf syrup and the rum-based Little Miss Sunshine includes a pleasing kick of red chili. There’s a decent range of wines and ‘hard liquor’ available and while the beer selection is a little limited, we’re inclined to forgive them this trifling sin. Stitch has also developed quite a reputation for its epic off-the-wall hot dogs: the duck, orange pistachio dog comes loaded with truffle sauce and foie gras while the French Poodle is a Toulouse-style sausage slathered in brie, pickled pear, garlic and mustard.
