The Baxter Inn

This basement laneway bar is one of the coolest spots in Sydney right now. The brainchild of Anton Forte and Jason Scott – the guys best known for the Shady Pines Saloon, it’s a more sophisticated set-up, carpeted and candle-lit, a smooth jazz and whiskey kind of place, like an upmarket American sports bar, only cooler. The service is great – these guys really know their drinks and they’re fun and friendly too – and the bar is well stocked with quality spirits.
They make a mean cocktail – though this isn’t some hushed temple to mixology and they have a good range of beers on tap as well as a seriously good wine list, featuring some real treats; best of all they stock a vast and seriously impressive range of whiskies, something like 360 different kinds, though that number may well be higher now. Their house pretzels are also a delight and the atmosphere is cool and convivial.
