Adonis Bar’s motto is “the window of the Aegean Sea”, and when you step into its cool and refined interior, encased in exposed stone walls and white marble, you would certainly be forgiven for thinking that you were in the balmy Mediterranean. Instead, this stylish bar is slap-bang in the middle of Japan’s hip Shibuya district, making the dupery even more intriguing. Once you’ve taken a seat at the long, sleek bar and been greeted by a white tuxedo-ed barman, you’ll be invited to peruse an impressively extensive drinks card which, at its heart, is a who’s-who of the best whiskies, vodkas, gins and rums. Cocktails include all of the classics – manhattans, gimlets, Moscow mules, sidecars and margaritas – as well as some unusual additions; the Charlie Chaplin concoction of sloe gin, apricot brandy and lemon juice being one of the most intriguing. There is also a seasonal cocktail menu created using fresh fruits and vegetables, but if you’re still unsure of your choice, you can simply point to your favorite fruits lined up at the bar and the bartender will create something especially for you. A small selection of wine, beer and champagne rounds out the drinks card, along with the popular after-dinner drink, Irish coffee. Speaking of dinner, Adonis Bar serves up daily delicate plates of pasta, risotto, pizza and salads, in addition to a few indulgent desserts (French toast, anyone?) and some tasty bar snacks of beef jerky, dried fruits and mixed nuts.
