Famous for its smoked food smoked soy, smoked cheese, smoked bacon, smoked oil, even smoked coffee, all made at its own factory in Karuizawa – this small bar and counter restaurant, hidden amid the noise and buzz of Ginza, is cosy and intimate, with only 26 seats. Its speciality smoked dishes pair well with a glass of whisky, of which they stock a good range along with a wide selection of local beer and sherry. At lunchtime, people flock here for the lunch specials the most popular being the rice with egg which you top with their smoked soy sauce, olive oil and sesame seeds. In the evening the food becomes more adventurous. The room is narrow but not cramped with a long counter, well stocked bar and a few booths. It’s a smart space, but the emphasis here is very much on the things in your plate and your glass. The bar snacks are top notch and they do a nice line in cocktails too. A favourite with locals, the success of its smoked products means its reputation as a place to check out is growing. Get in while you can.
