The golden Ginza district is one of Tokyo’s most exclusive shopping areas, with its gilded streets being home to a veritable who’s who of international luxury brands and boutiques. This is a district to shop ’til you drop and look good doing it. If you’re the type of person, on the other hand, who prefers perusing top-notch cocktail lists to storefronts, then look no further than Bar Avanti. Taking its name from the Italian language and roughly translating to “feel free to let go”, as soon as you enter Bar Avanti’s unassuming door hidden among Ginza’s glittering retail outlets, you’ll feel free to let go and relax immediately. From behind the bar, you’ll be greeted by a friendly all-female owner/mixologist team who have competed with – and beaten – men to win numerous Japanese bartender awards. These ladies concoct classic cocktails like gin and tonics and Moscow Mules with the highest of standards and present them in beautiful glassware to boot. In addition to an extensive cocktail list, Bar Avanti is home to a wide range of whiskies from Scotland, America, Ireland, Canada, and of course Japan. As well as the cocktails, Bar Avanti serves delectable food, and has garnered a bit of a cult following for their special pastas, which typically include both homemade and homegrown ingredients.
