Madison Avenue Pub
May 11, 2018
Great neighbourhood bar famous for beer, babes and banter over the pool tables. What started off as a basement boozer in a Victorian house on Madison has now expanded to fill four floors, each with a spacious patio, where cheap drinks and food is eagerly consumed on the heated decks. The interior is all British-inspired brass fittings, wooden floors and cool burgundy booths, with a piano bar and two pool rooms to keep the restless active. Affectionately known as The Maddy, regulars here are a mix of local students and post grads in fact it’s pretty much seen as an integral part of the city’s university experience. They’re all here for the fun and the flirting, and the atmosphere is one of a heady singles bar, where everyone knows your name – or will do by the end of the evening. This is a place for socialising, so in place of loud music and dancing so you’ll find two pool rooms (with 10 tables in total), six full bars, one Scotch bar and a piano bar. Drinks-wise, the most popular tipples seem to be beer and wine, and there’s usually some kind of special drinks deal to be had. But bar staff know how to mix margaritas and martinis for the more sophisticated amongst the crowd. Food is not bad either – don’t miss their salmon salad or hot wings. And if you like to take your backpack down the pub, be warned they’re banned here after 7pm on a Thursday. Nope, we’ve no idea either.
