Late Night Drinking
May 11, 2018
The Donnelly Group-owned Republic is an appealingly energetic addition to the Granville Strip. It bills itself as a ‘London-style’ bar, and while anyone who has spent time enjoying the diverse nightlife of the English capital will attest that this descriptor means precisely nothing, we’ll forgive them the empty hype because this sprawling two-level space glimmers with possibility. Downstairs contains the main bar area and dance-floor, a high-ceilinged, expensively decorated and spacious area complete with a bar that runs almost the length of the room (thereby cutting down on queuing time, so you can spend more of your night dancing). The upstairs VIP space boasts large windows that look out over the pulsing heart of the city streets. Tables are candlelit and the leather chairs are perfect for sinking into with a drink (which, by the way, are very well-prepared indeed) and there’s table service so once you’re in one of those comfy seats, there’s no reason to get up again in a hurry. If cocktails are your thing, try a Scarlett Letter (Smirnoff Vanilla Vodka, peach schnapps, ginger beer and cranberry) or a Jane Collins (Beefeater gun meets pink grapefruit juice) though there’s an extensive range of spirits, wines and champagnes on offer. It’s not cheap look around you if you’re wondering where the money went but the quality and the ambience are well worth the price. Fridays and Saturdays see DJs liven the place up with a mix of rock, electro, house and funk. The crowd is a mixed bunch, with cool kids and moneyed professionals both well represented, and the atmosphere is vibrant and colourful, glossy as a photo-shoot, smooth as a honey martini.
