- Great food

Opened in 1990 by Mario Castillo, Barfly’s is a classic cocktail bar in the American mould. It’s an atmospheric, old-school space, the kind of bar that forever resounds to the sounds of Frank Sinatra. Housed within the Hotel Metternich, the handsome, amber-lit bar has chequerboard floors, a bottle-lined back wall and lots of polished walnut surfaces. The effect is warm and welcoming. The drinks list is a thing of beauty. They stock some 1,200 different whiskies, around 500 different rums and have a truly vast cocktail list. Martinis are served in the classic style crisp and strong, the kind of drink of which Don Draper would thoroughly approve (and then consume several) – and the variety of the menu is such that there’s bound to be something on it to suit all tastes. Music by the Rat Pack plays in the background and they also boast a good selection of cigars in their humidor. There’s not much in the way of bar food beyond a few basic snacks so you may want to grab a bite beforehand. Immune to passing cocktail fashions, this makes a great place to savour a peaty, smoky single malt, a deep dark rum or a well-made Manhattan while escaping, albeit briefly from the pulse and rush of the city.
