Jazz & Blues

You know a bar is serious when it’s open until 3am on a Sunday night. This gem is a Viennese institution, originally the legendary Mounier Bar in Kaerntner before owner Michael Satke decided to relocate it to Seitenstettengasse. The building, designed by Gregor Eichinger and Christian Knechtl, is a great example of cheeky modernist Viennese architecture. ‘Frozen moments’ (walls covered in water-plant tapestries from the 1930s) give way to a liquid theme that encompasses drinking as well as aquariums filled with plants and fish. The venue’s super-stylish, blue-carpeted interior is an affectionate mix of old and new, blending the original dark wood panelling of the Mounier with new, light wood that curves around the bar. It’s a warm and cosy spot for fun and flirtation, helped along by some strong drinks and funky music in the background. Order from the great young bar staff and if you can keep your eyes of their skilled mixing moves this is the place to come for an expertly made drink gaze at the fish behind them. You can choose from more than 200 cocktails (there are some great Champagne-based ones) or dip into the wide selection of brandys and whiskeys, if that’s more to your taste. If you want to keep a clear head, the ‘Drink & Drive’ list includes the wonderfully indulgent Choco-Banana (chocolate, banana, cream and milk). Stylish, elegant and beautifully judged, First Floor combines great service and stunning decor in a delightful fashion. We give it a first in every respect.
