Kaktus – or Kaktusbar to give it the full name used by the locals – is definitely more club than bar. It’s firmly established as one of the most popular nightspots in this city, with a pounding soundtrack and a vibrant atmosphere that attracts a young, friendly, ready to party crowd – if you’re on the lookout for somewhere to have a quiet night out, this isn’t the venue for you. It gets pretty crazy on the weekends with parties going on well past 4am. The music is inspired, with regular sets by guest DJs as well as a local roster of favourites, and the vibe is electric, with regular happy hours and drinks promotions to ensure that everyone is having a good time. Normal prices are about standard for a nightclub in the area – this isn’t a particularly high end venue. The décor is bright and cheerful, with lots of primary colours and neon offset by bare brick and metal staircases and the table tops have been known to host the occasional scantily clad dancer strutting her stuff to the appreciation of the patrons. Yup, it’s that kind of place, though in fairness the crowd is mixed and attracts lots of young women, so it’s not particularly just a ‘lad’s night out’ venue, and the staff are friendly and welcoming, ready to mix your favourite drink or play your favourite tunes, making it a prime choice for those celebrating birthdays or stag or hen dos. If you’re looking to large it in Vienna, make this place a destination. Not the slickest or the most stylish of venues, we admit, but nor does it pretend to be, and anyway, you’ll be having too much fun to notice.
