Although subtitled ‘The American Bar’, this chic city spot is designed in the colonial style of a Ceylonese tea planter’s mansion or a Commonwealth governor’s African jungle hideaway. A fixture on the Vienna scene since it opened in the mid-90s, this place oozes authenticity with its imported furniture – expect leather sofas, wooden fittings and potted palms harking back to the days of empire, while burly doormen insist their upmarket clientele dress for the part. It’s not stuffy or stuck up, though, and the loud music a mixture of jazz and soul, depending on the evening and lively drinks make for a more modern feel. There’s a huge array of drinks to tempt you over 450 varieties of spirits on offer with a focus on single malt whiskies, as well as rums and cognacs, so if you like quality drinks this is the place for you. Ask one of the well-practised bar staff to build you a cocktail of their choice or try the Planter’s Punch and the happy hour runs Sundays to Wednesdays 5pm-7pm when cocktails are half price. There’s a range of tasty bar food available (or you could try sister venue the Livingstone Club, which offers a selection of steaks and fusion dishes if you want some heartier fare). Planter’s is open weeknights early evenings till late and till 4am at weekends, and is the ideal spot to relax with a brandy in hand and while away the evening and if you’re really taken with the place, you can (sort of) take it home with you, as the venue offers a ‘Mobile Planter’s’ private party service where they bring the party to you.
