Set your sights sky high when visiting this swanky venue, located on the top floor of the Steffl department store. When you step out of the glass elevator that whisks you up the building, you’re greeted by a continuous sweeping glass window that runs the length of the bar and offers one of the finest views in Vienna. You’ll feel on top of the world as the vista of the old city centre unfolds before you, studded with iconic landmarks like St Charles Church and the beautiful Giant Ferris Wheel, immortalised in Orson Welles’s classic thriller The Third Man. The palm trees, plush cream decor and shiny grand piano give the place a lovely 1970s retro feel, with a free-standing circular bar at one end and a dining area at the other. The food is a mix of Austrian classics such as Tafelspitz and Wiener Schnitzel alongside Asia-inspired stir-fry dishes and Mediterranean cuisine; quick snacks are also available if you’re on a tight shopping or sightseeing schedule. Sky is probably best for a relaxing afternoon coffee among the ‘It’ girls and moneyed Viennese housewives or as a pre-club pit-stop for a couple of excellent Strawberry Daiquiris, before heading across the corridor to the chic roof-top bar for some slick service and a dose of high-class living. Its impressive range of drinks features more than 350 cocktails and 80 types of whiskey. By the end of the night, it’s highly likely that you won’t want to come back down to earth.
