This stylish café bar has a clean and airy interior, a world away from the traditional and, dare we say it, slightly stuffy image of the Viennese grand café. There are retro bar stools to sit on and large windows that flood the space with light and at night warm neon adds a lustrous glow, while the heated outdoor seating area is just the spot to relax on a sunny day or clear evening and watch people stroll by. Located just off the Rochusmarkt, it’s particularly good as a breakfast spot (the coffee is great and will give you a morning boost). Rochus, though, keeps up its appeal throughout the day as it’s open from 8am till 2am weekdays and till 4am Thursdays through Saturday, there’s never a bad time to visit. Cocktails run the gamut from the classic to the creative (a vodka and wasabi concoction a good example of the latter) and their range of rum-based drinks is particularly good impressive (try the Scorpion, which mixes rum, Triple sec and brandy with orange for a real sting in the tail). Or perhaps you can order one of their absinthes if you’re feeling in the mood, or choose from a very generous selection of spirits. (We’re especially impressed by the choice of alcohol free cocktails on offer, in a list put together with wit and care should we be in an abstaining mood, we’d order the Safe Sex on the Beach, just for the pun alone). If you’re eating there’s a wide selection of sweet and savoury dishes on offer (and who can resist something from the dessert menu when in Vienna?). A venue that really prioritises service and offers a quality drinking experience, Rochus is definite must-visit.
